BiciTransCat will develop a new coastal axis of cross-border sustainable mobility, connecting the north-eastern Girona region and France and improving intermodality. On 17 August 2016, the European Commission approved version 2.2 of the INTERREG V-A Spain-France-Andorra Programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020).
The Programme’s primary aim is to maintain and strengthen economic and social integration in the cross-border area by means of cooperation. To that end, efforts will focus on the promotion and joint funding of cooperation projects implemented by French, Spanish and Andorran partners in the relevant eligible regions.
The INTERREG V-A Spain-France-Andorra Programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020) is funded by the European Union, with a total budget of €178 million provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF without technical assistance).
On 4 November 2016, the POCTEFA Monitoring Committee approved the official text in relation to the second call for applications for the INTERREG V-A Spain-France-Andorra Programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020).
On 31 May 2017, The Girona Greenways Consortium, along with its four partners, Figueres City Council, the Pyrénées-Orientales General Council, The Alt Empordà Regional Council and Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole, submitted the ‘EFA 156/16 BICITRANSCAT’ project for the development of new cycle routes and cross-border multimodal links to promote sustainable mobility in response to the second POCTEFA call for project applications.
The POCTEFA 2014-2020 Programming Committee, convened on 8 November 2017 in Biarritz, approved the resolution of the second call for applications to authorise 62 cross-border cooperation projects with European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding for the sum of €71 million. One of the projects approved was EFA 156/16 BICITRANSCAT.
The BICITRANSCAT project aims to develop a new coastal axis of sustainable cross-border mobility organised around public transport and the existing European cycling routes, ‘EuroVelo 8: The Mediterranean Route (Cádiz-Athens)’ and ‘Pirinexus’.
This project thus meets the high expectations of cycle tourists, tourists with fixed abode and the local population as outlined in the previous project, Link. BICITRANSCAT aims to link the main tourist destinations of Girona and the Pyrénées-Orientales area via a cycle route linked to various modes of public transport, thus promoting sustainable mobility and offering a coastal route which provides an alternative to travelling on roads that are often congested during the summer months.
To that end, the ‘EFA 156/16 BICITRANSCAT’ project has been granted a budget of €4,689,269.25, with 65% of the funding provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Interreg V-A Spain-France-Andorra (POCTEFA 2014-2020) programme and 25% by the Girona Provincial Council (for the Catalan partners), as one of the entities affiliated with the project, and 10% self-funded by the Girona Greenways Consortium.
The aim of the project is to link the tourist destinations in the Girona province with those of the Pyrénées-Orientales department in France through a cycling network which is also connected to various modes of public transport.
Getting Around Catalonia by Public Transport’ is the online route planner provided by the Government of Catalonia which integrates all the public transport services operated within Catalonia.
